Renewed Premium Costs You a 365-Day Return Window

|
11 min read
Amazon Renewed presents four condition grades, and almost every guide treats them as a quality ladder you climb for a better price. Put Amazon's own spec table next to its own Guarantee page and a different picture appears. Premium and Excellent carry word-for-word identical cosmetic standards. What separates them is a battery floor, a label, and a buyer return window that goes from 90 days to 365. The grade is not a marketing decision. It is a liability decision.
Amazon Renewed is Amazon's store for refurbished and pre-owned products. Sellers must apply with itemised invoices showing at least fifty thousand dollars of qualifying refurbished purchases, list every item at least five per cent below the new version, and back each sale with the Amazon Renewed Guarantee. This is the Amazon.com programme. Products are sold in one of four conditions, Premium, Excellent, Good or Acceptable, and most carry a ninety-day return period while Renewed Premium and Renewed Automotive carry three hundred and sixty-five days.

Can you get into Amazon Renewed at all?

Only with a documented purchase history, and the number is high enough to exclude most casual resellers. Amazon's Renewed programme page opens the door to "distributors or resellers, manufacturers or brand owners, brand-authorized refurbishers, refurbishers, repairers, or ITAD providers", and then asks for proof: "Itemized invoices showing a minimum total value of $50,000 in qualifying refurbished purchases" "in the previous 90 days", or "180 days for products related to Home, Tools, Kitchen, or Lawn & Garden categories". For Apple the bar is fifty times higher: "$2.5 million for Apple branded items".
The invoice rules disqualify most of the paperwork a reseller actually has
Amazon is specific about the document, not just the amount. Invoices "must be authentic and unaltered" and "must show a completed transaction, your full business name and address, the supplier's full name and contact information", and they "must be itemized with brand and model information". That excludes the paperwork a smaller operation usually has: retail receipts, order confirmations, manifests and anything issued before a transaction completed, such as a quote or a pro forma. Amazon says it "typically" returns an application decision "within 10 days of submission".

What do the four grades actually specify?

Less than their names suggest, and the gap between the top two is the surprise. Amazon's customer-facing Renewed help page states that products are "fully functional and in one of four conditions: Premium, Excellent, Good, or Acceptable", then prints a specification for each. Reading them side by side is the fastest way to see where the real thresholds sit.
Grade Screen Body Battery Buyer return period
Premium No scratches No cosmetic damage visible at 12 inches Over 90% 365 days
Excellent No scratches No cosmetic damage visible at 12 inches Over 80% 90 days (most items)
Good No scratches Light scratches, barely visible at 12 inches, imperceptible to touch Over 80% 90 days (most items)
Acceptable A few shallow scratches, invisible when the screen is on Light scratches clearly visible at 12 inches and perceptible to touch, maximum three minor dents Over 80% 90 days (most items)
amazon renewed condition grades compared
The first two rows are not similar, they are the same sentences. Premium and Excellent both read "Screen: No scratches" and "Body: No signs of cosmetic damage (scratches, dents, and other) are visible when the product is held 12 inches away." What the table does change between them is labelling and a number: the cosmetic condition is called "Premium" rather than "Excellent", the functional condition "Premium" rather than "Fully Functional", and the battery floor moves from ">80% of original battery life" to ">90%". A footnote confirms the same split in plainer words: batteries are "tested to meet at least 80% (or at least 90% for Renewed Premium products) capacity relative to new at the time of the sale".
The Guarantee page turns that label into a liability
Amazon's Renewed Guarantee page states it in one line: "Most Amazon Renewed items include a 90-day return period. Renewed Premium and Renewed Automotive items come with a 365-day return period." So the grade that costs you nothing extra in cosmetic work, only a ten-point battery threshold, is the grade that lets a buyer return the item for a year. Amazon names Renewed Automotive alongside Renewed Premium for that longer window.

What does the grade decision actually cost?

Four times the window in which a sale can reverse. A ninety-day return period closes inside a quarter, which means a Q4 sale is settled before the year ends. A 365-day period keeps every unit you sold this October open until next October, and it does so on an item whose resale value is falling the whole time. That is the part the grade names hide: the cosmetic promise is identical, so the extra exposure is not buying the customer a better-looking device, it is buying a longer battery guarantee and a far longer right to change their mind.
  • The guarantee is yours, not Amazon's. Amazon requires that "your company backs all of your refurbished products with the Amazon Renewed Guarantee and is responsible for all claims under the guarantee", while telling buyers "we reserve the right to decline returns or refunds if we determine that the Amazon Renewed Guarantee is being abused".
  • A buyer who skips the factory reset cannot be refunded. Amazon instructs buyers to back up data, disable tracking, unlink cloud accounts and factory reset, and states that "if these steps aren't performed, the device won't qualify for a replacement or refund".
  • Returns are free to the buyer, and if Amazon refunds or replaces and the item never arrives back, "you may be charged the original purchase price".
  • Accessories and packaging may be generic at every grade, including Premium, and "wireless devices don't come with headphones".
  • Refurbished phones are not guaranteed to keep their waterproof seal, which Amazon states on the same page rather than leaving to the listing.
One more layer sits on selected items only, and it is worth knowing because it changes the shape of the liability rather than its length. Amazon states that "select Amazon Renewed items include Amazon's 30-day return period followed by a FREE 11-month limited warranty serviced by Asurion for defects in material and workmanship with no deductible". That trades a long return right for a short one plus a warranty, which is a better deal for a seller, because a warranty claim is assessed against defects rather than exercised at will. It is also strictly geographic: the warranty "only applies to select Amazon Renewed items purchased on Amazon.com and delivered within the 50 states of the United States, excluding Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and APO, FPO and DPO addresses".

What else does the programme take from your margin?

A floor under your discount, before any of the usual fees. Amazon requires that "you must list Renewed products at a 5% or more discount than their new product counterpart". That is unusual: most Amazon pricing rules set a ceiling to stop you overcharging, and this one sets a minimum gap to the new version. It also means your price is tethered to a product you do not control. If the brand discounts the new model for Prime Big Deal Days, your compliant Renewed price has to move with it, and Amazon does not say which price the 5% is measured against, which is itself worth planning around.
The refurbishment standard is the other cost, and it is written as an absolute. Products "must be inspected, repaired, cleaned, tested, and repackaged (if applicable) to ensure they meet original manufacturer specifications". Amazon describes the inspection and testing process as typically including "a full diagnostic test, replacement of any faulty parts, and a thorough cleaning process", and says the cleaning "is carried out by the qualified supplier or by Amazon". Meeting original manufacturer specification is a higher bar than working order, and it is what the battery thresholds and the twelve-inch cosmetic test are there to make checkable.
Grade down and you keep the same cosmetic promise
If a unit clears the cosmetic bar but you have the choice of grade, Excellent and Premium commit you to exactly the same screen and body standard. Listing as Excellent leaves the buyer 90 days instead of 365 and holds you to an 80% battery rather than 90%. Premium is worth choosing when the battery genuinely tests above 90% and the price premium covers a year of return exposure, not because it sounds better on the detail page.

How to work out whether Renewed is worth applying for

  1. Add up 90 days of itemised refurbished invoices - The threshold is $50,000 of qualifying refurbished purchases in the previous 90 days, or 180 days if your products relate to Home, Tools, Kitchen or Lawn & Garden. Count only documents that show a completed transaction, your full business name and address, the supplier's full name and contact details, and itemised brand and model information. If your stock arrives on manifests or retail receipts, the number does not matter yet.
  2. Check whether you are in the Apple lane - Apple-branded items carry a separate threshold of $2.5 million. If Apple devices are the plan, the entry requirement is fifty times the standard one, which usually means a different business rather than a bigger version of the same one.
  3. Price the 5% rule against the new product’s selling price - Every Renewed listing has to sit at least 5% under the new counterpart. Model that gap against the new product's actual selling price through a promotional period, not its everyday price, because that is when the rule bites and when your margin is thinnest.
  4. Decide the grade on battery evidence, not on ambition - Premium requires over 90% of original battery life and gives the buyer a 365-day return period. Excellent requires over 80% and gives 90 days, with the same screen and body standard. Grade on what the diagnostic actually reports, and treat the longer window as a cost you are accepting rather than a badge you are earning.
  5. Budget for returns you cannot refuse and some you can - Returns are free to the buyer, and where Amazon refunds or replaces without receiving the item back it tells the buyer they "may be charged the original purchase price" - that charge is the customer’s, not yours. The clearest documented refusal is a device that arrives without a factory reset, which Amazon says "won't qualify for a replacement or refund". Build the refurbishment and testing cost per unit on the assumption that a share of stock cycles twice.
The number that decides whether a grade is worth it
Take your return rate on 90-day Renewed stock and ask what it would be over a year on the same units. The extra months fall in a period when the new model has usually been replaced, so the comparison a buyer makes in month ten is not the one they made in week two. If the price premium for Premium does not cover that difference per unit, list as Excellent and keep the shorter window.
Renewed stock makes per-unit cost visibility matter more than usual, because the same ASIN can carry different refurbishment costs, different grades and a return window that varies by a factor of four. Keeping the cost of goods, the fees and the returns against each SKU in one place is what shows whether a grade is paying for itself. SellerMagnet's profit analytics track fees and margin per ASIN so a grade's return behaviour shows up against its price rather than in a quarterly surprise.

How long can a buyer return an Amazon Renewed item?

Most Renewed items carry a 90-day return period. Renewed Premium and Renewed Automotive items carry 365 days, and some selected items instead have a 30-day return followed by an 11-month Asurion warranty.

What is the difference between Renewed Premium and Excellent?

On Amazon's published table the screen and body standards are identical. Premium requires over 90% of original battery life against over 80%, is labelled Premium rather than Fully Functional, and carries a 365-day return period.

What do I need to join Amazon Renewed?

Itemised invoices showing at least $50,000 of qualifying refurbished purchases in the previous 90 days, or 180 days for Home, Tools, Kitchen and Lawn & Garden, and $2.5 million for Apple-branded items.

Do I have to discount Renewed products?

Yes. Amazon requires Renewed products to be listed at a discount of 5% or more against the new counterpart, so the gap is a programme rule rather than a pricing decision.

Who pays for a Renewed Guarantee claim?

The seller backs their own products under the guarantee. Amazon states it may decline returns or refunds where it determines the guarantee is being abused.

Does the Asurion warranty apply outside the United States?

No. Amazon limits it to selected items bought on Amazon.com and delivered within the 50 US states, excluding Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and APO, FPO and DPO addresses.
